Over filling an V70 automatic transmission?

Post by benjschneider »

OK......I have done a lot of research on the automatic transmission which is in my 2001 V70. Almost all say there is a little yellow dipstick for the automatic transmission near the engine block. Mine does not have one. In its place is a vent. This is a piece of 6mm ID tubing with a cream colored cap on it. There is no way of measuring the transmission fluid level that I can see.

The car has 156k miles on it, and the transmission has a very slight seal leak. I do not know how much fluid has leaked out. I want to do a fluid flush because the transmission has been shifting hard, and I don't know the service history of this car. When I did the first oil change, I could tell that it had not been changed for at least 20k miles, so the tranny fluid????

I do not know if the transmission is low on fluid, and the normal flush and fill method will not work, because the fluid level is most likely low now and I will need to add more fluid then I drain out.

I have three questions:

One: How does one take off the top transmission cooler line if the green clip is broken?

Two: How does one determine the level of the transmission fluid without a dipstick?

Three: What will happen if the transmission is over filled?

Thanks, Ben

all '01s have a dipstick for the tranny..

Is hidden under cables and lower radiator hose, behind the drivers side headlight area

^ Yup, it's down low in the engine bay, on the drivers' side, near the bottom, but accessible from the top. I'd drain / fill asap.

the lower rad hose is on top of it. It is just forward and below where you see the vent hose with cap. Remove the fresh air duct to air cleaner to give better access and then hold rad hose to the side and then you'll have to push the sprung retainer forward to draw out the dispstick.

I found it!!!!! Now why couldn't Volvo make the tube and dip stick just six inches longer? They hide the thing where the sun won't shine!

I was able to get the cooling hose off too. So now I am off to get some 9/16 plastic tubing and do the flush.

Thanks again Jimmy

How did you get the cooling hose off? The green clip is also broken on my 99 s80.
