88 740 GLE Barely enough power to move vehicle

Post by Thomas Esnes »

I have a 1988 Volvo 740 GLE non-turbo with 85,000 miles on it which has developed a recent and sudden condition whereby it barely has enough power to move the vehicle. It seemed to start as a too rich condition, but now it may be too lean. Starts fine, but if throttle is blipped (in neutral), engine nearly dies. Will accelerate to high idle if throttle is slowly opened (in neutral). In gear, no power whatsoever.

Both fuel pumps were replaced approximately 3 years ago, fuel pump relay was replaced last year. Tried repacing spark plugs and oxygen sensor, techron in fuel to clean injectors, checked throttle position switch for switch action at both extremes (tested OK) and adjusted switch to trip at idle position. Did not check fuel pressure but witnessed strong flow when I disconnected the fuel line and cranked engine.

Please help! I can't seem to locate any good technical source of info other than a Hayne's manual which doesn't cover the operation of all of the fuel injection system components in sufficient detail.

Here is something to try. Disconnect the plug to the Air Mass Meter, then start the car again. If the condition changes, your problem is there. If not, look elsewhere.
