Volvo V40 2.0LPT yr 2001 fans behaviour

Post by bobe84 »

Just out of curiosity, is it normal than when im starting engine that has been off all day(completely cold) engine fan kicks in?
Can someone please explain me, or point me to some links so i can see is this normal behaviour?
Also im not sure is it engine fan or ac fan...

Also to note, it is about 30-35C here now...

The two fans on that car are used for a/c and engine cooling. If you do not have a/c then there is only one fan and I guess that is where the confusion comes from. Anyway, if the a/c is on and temp is warm then once compressor switches on the fan will start in about 10-15 seconds. The fans wouldn't start immediately at engine start. If the fans start immediately then the coolant temp sensor or wiring would be the things to investigate.
Also, turning off a/c and starting the car and the fans not starting would also give you a confirmation of whether it is a/c or a coolant sensor problem.

I have a/c. So far i didn't determine which fan is it. But i'm pretty sure that couple of time fan did kick in even previously to the engine starting(when i turned ignition key).
If i notice fan these days i will see if it is ac or engine fan...
Last month and half during day temp can reach 40C, and my car is black, and it is not hidden from sun... only saying this...
No engine overheating whatever...
Also i hear sometimes engine fan during slow city driving which is normal( i presume that electronic regulating fan also ECT sensor is ok, but i will try to test ECT asap)
So, next couple of days will see if ECT is ok, and also which fan is kicking in.

Today i checked ECT and IAT sensor values, they seem to be ok, reading with simple unimeter and directly from sensor.
It is 33C here now, and engine was not running since last night, when i started engine the AC fan kicked in.
Anyone, is this normal( i belive not) and what to check next?

Perhaps ECU detects hot air temp and wants to try to cool it alittle with ac fan.

Update: I drove the car for couple of km, ac fan turned off. Probably was just my paranoia. :)
