V70 2.5 TDi smokes, chugs and doesn't want to start cold

Post by nigelb »

Hi

I thought this was a simple case of glow(s) having gone, but the garage assures me that they're all fine, working, and the relay is fine too.

They're now saying it may be down to fuel not staying on the engine?
(something about the lifter pump letting fuel flow back, or a hole in a pipe etc).

Has anyone hit this sort of problem before?

Left it with them to explore in the morning, so they'll have the car, stone cold, will hopefully higjlight what's going wrong.

Interestingly, you can leave it switched off for 5 mins when cold (but run for say 2 mins) it'll smoke, get it warm and leave it 2 hours and it'll start fine.

All ideas welcome.

Hi

Yep, its a diesel, seems to be ding approx 40 mpg average (I tend to do a fair few motorway miles).

I'm based in Cambridge, UK.

I really hpe the garage gets this sorted, it sticks in my throat paying for a car, then within 2 days ending up having to cadge lifts, or cycle the 7.5 miles to work!

Hi

Turns out that 3 of the 5 glow plugs were dead, and there was also a leak on the fuel filter (meant fuel was draining back away from the engine).

Regards the filter, I understand that there's a rubber gasket on top of the filter, that needs to be lubed before its screwed in, otherwise it grips the shaft too tightly, and tears (which is what had happened).

So, I'm hoping that, in the morning, it will start without a fight!

Fingers crossed.

Good going!
Hey, I have a question. I was asked by a Aussie about a 10 valve 850. Know anything about these? We don't have them in the U.S. He says he thinks it's not an interference engine. But I can't confirm it. Do you know? Interference engines (the ones we all have) will tear up if the timing belt breaks but a non-interference engine won't.

Hi

I have had this Volvo less than a week, and its my first.

I know almost nothing about mine as yet, let alone any others!!

However, as I understand it, most modern engines are "interference engines", ie you're in for a big bill if the cambelt goes.

My view has always been to steer clear of an engine that has had a cambelt fault, it may have been fixed enough to run, but do you _know_ that its been fully tested, and that all the required work has been done?

Best bet would be a friend, who happens to be a mechanic, and doesn't mind taking on a project! (wish I knew one, "just in case").

Thanks for your thoughts on the 10valve engine. I'll let this guy know...but really, I don't know his specific issue and whether or not the engine he has has had cam issues or not.

Enjoy your ride now that you've got the glow plugs sorted out! :D

It was perishing cold this morning, but the V70 started beautifully, quickly, with no cloud of white smoke :)
