850 Manual tranny leak at or between bolts.

Post by pmonk »

I am confused as a leak I mentioned a while back is becoming larger. It seems to be gathering at the bolts and area between them on the transmission halves (from what I was told earlier) on a 5 speed 850. It shifts perfectly and drives perfectly, and the fluid that is coming out is light oil colored, much lighter than engine oil. It seems to be getting worse. I buy standards because they usually treat me better than automatics, but I have never encountered this before. Has anybody dealt with this before. It now leaves about a 6 inch circle on the ground whenever I park it for a while. Any help will be appreciated.

White850Turbo responded to my earlier post and was the one who told me that area could leak, but said it wasn't that common. Any Ideas what to do? Thanks for any help.

If you guys have O'reilly's Auto Parts down there, go there and ask the guy at the counter for some UV leak detector dye. Clean the area around where the leak is very well w/ some degreaser and make sure that no oil is left there. Then add about 3/4 bottle to your gearbox oil. As soon as it starts leaking again, get under the car w/ a black light and if it is gearbox oil leaking, the exact source of the leak will become very obvious. If it is indeed leaking at the case halves, the tranny must be pulled down, the halves split, and a new special liquid gasket applied.

Boy, that's some good input. I will try that, I can just feel that it will be whatever is the most expensive thing to fix. If I do have to pull down the tranny, I suppose I ought to do the RMS and clutch too, weather I need to or not right? and maybe the motor mounts. This sounds like another $1000+ repair.
