Thinking about buying an 850

Post by sailingharry »

I'm looking to buy an 850 wagon, the one I'm looking at right now is a '95. I have a few questions. This forum alone is enough to make me want to buy!

* I know this is a forum of enthusiasts, so I probably won't get an unbiased answer :), but are there any maintenance headaches, chronic failures, etc? My last car, a Mercury Villager that I loved, had a handful of problems (none I ever experienced) that members of a site like this could spout off. Be brutal and honest, please.

* I'm looking to tow a 1000 lb trailer. I've towed it with a variety of vehicles, and no problems, but how are the Volvos? The one I'm looking at is a 5-speed.

* What is the real-world MPG?

* Any other comments?

Thanks!

Others have posted about towing things without much problem. I don't know the specifics. Real world numbers are high 20's on the highway and low 20's in the city with mid-20's combined as far as mpg is concerned.

See the stalling thread in this forum. 850's (mine included) have stalling problems that appear to be a mystery to all. Could be fuel pump relay, fuel pump, or throttle issue, varies by car. Mine is in the shop now, wouldn't start yesterday, but the mechanic says it started fine today...it's very frustrating!

Good luck!
