83 240GLT idles too fast...

Post by wetbackZO »

well, I got my volvo running after a 10 year vacation/retirement!! Put all new pumps and filters and it runs nicely, except for the high idle. It idles at about 1500rpm and I can't find an idle adjuster anywhere; according to my haynes manual, the auxiliary air regulator is what controls the idle and might be at fault. Anyone have any helpful ideas as to what it would be?? There are no vacuum leaks whatsoever and the car runs great other than the high idle. Haven't taken it out for a spin since I'm waiting for some tires for it. TIA volvoheads!!

There is a black plastic knob for adjusting idle under the intake. But most likely this is not it. There is an automatic idle adjust thing and it is probably stuck. I think if you go to www.fpcgroton.com you can see what it looks like. I would just take it off and clean it with carb cleaner this will probably set you right.

thanx for the reply dude...my car is equiped with the CONSTANT IDLE SPEED SYSTEM and therefore has no idle adjustment. The idle is controlled by a computer. I'm currently doing some tests on this system and so far it seems like an electrical problem, somehow the idle air valve is not receiving a signal from the computer to lower the rpm's. I'll keep messing with it and post up on the progress...I won't stop till I get to the bottom of this problem. Other than that the car runs awesome! Thanx.

UPDATE...
Found the problem with the high idle...it was a bad idle air control valve, lucky me, the car came with a working spare!!! Had to go to work before I could finish it up, but it sure drove me crazy for several hours trying to find the fault, but I did and that's what counts! Man, I sure am learning this CI and CIS systems and I'm starting to really like them. SAWEET!!

Well, this car drove like a Volvo does...awesome!!! Went on my first real test drive and everything worked like it's supposed to. I just can't believe this thing drives so well after it hibernated for so damn long...it's a volvo!! Now it's time to do a good cleaning on it inside and out, get it insured and new plates/tags and go for a long trip and see how it really does under some real loads. Needless to say, i'm a happy camper!! Thanx for all the help forum!!!

I've been taking the volvo to work a couple of times, darn thing runs awesome except for dying everytime I cruise to a stop. I have come to the conclusion that I have a bad constant idle computer. It should be good to go when I get a good one for it. This turbo brick is now my daily driver!!!
