Timing Belt ?

Post by zepol »

First of all Hello to all in Volvo land!
I just bought a 1998 S70 Volvo 88000 miles.
Just wondering if there is a way to know if the timing belt
has been replaced!
Thanks!

If done at a dealer there would be a sticker atttached to the timing belt cover indicating the date and mileage. '98 was a split year with the timing belt the early ones were 70k the late are 105K If your engine number is 1266128 or higher you have a late '98

If it doesn't have a sticker on the timing cover saying it's been changed, then change it. If it's the older version with the hydraulic tensioner, change it immediately. If it breaks you're looking at $4,000 in repairs to the head and valve train. Even if it's the newer version with the mechanical tensioner, change the belt and the tensioner. There's also a time recommendation on the belt as well as a mileage recommended change interval. You're coming up on 8 years if it's the original belt and that's the outer limit for the belt.

Thanks for that info! I read the serial number of the timing belt cover and it is 1193265. Date Born of S70 is 10/97. I am guess this early car. How hard is it to replace timing belt yourself. I am a gear head but never done a Volvo timing belt.
Thanks!

Hopefully this will help:

I would recommend you buy the cam lock tool from IPD to make sure your cams don't move during the procedure. It's sold here for under $25.

Read the other posts and the repair sections madeinjapan referenced and you should have no problem. Just make sure you cycle the crank through by hand a few times before you start it up. Turn the crank nut clockwise from the RH side of the car. Recheck the alignment and make sure the belt is tight before you start it up cause getting it wrong is very costly.

Man Oh Man! ......This website totally rocks when you need help.
Thanks to all on the subject matter.!!
I am on other website forums for vintage
motorcycles and when post something there you almost never get
a response for some help, they take forever if any response. By
that time I have already figured out.
Thanks to all!.........of course I will be posting some more help in the
future.
