2006 v70 xc with poor mileage

Post by gdiemand »

Thanks for this great site. Wish I knew that the ETM problems were so widespread...had lots of issues with my 99 v70xc, finally had it replaced by
the dealer at my cost, of course, so I will try to get reimbursed. I now have a 2006 v70xc and am so disappointed at the mileage, especially with
the cost of gas. My 99 averaged 24-26 mpg highway ( I commute 150 miles per day), but the 06 is only getting a meager 20.8 mpg highway.
Have spoken to the dealer, little to no satisfaction. I fully understand that
the sticker MPGs are grossly exaggerated on all cars, but 20.8 mpg is
unreasonable. Was wondering if any others have had this problem with
their v70 xc, since the dealer has not had any other complaints...
Thanks so much.

uuuhhhh, hate to tell you this, but that's it. 26 mpg out of a '98? Was the rear driveshaft out of it? Either you're math was off or you got one of 'em secrete experiment cars that they're not supposed to sell that can go coast to coast on a fart.......

Well, I picked up a brand new XC yesterday and drove it 120 miles home at an average 75mph with some windy road and a couple passings and mileage indicated 23.5 mpg

****** Edited to add...

This past weekend we took the XC on a 1300 mile trip, starting down by the Arizona border west of Bisbee, up to Silver City NM, over thru the mountains to Truth or Consequences NM, Up I-25 to Albuquerque, then up the turquoise hwy to Santa-fe, then a few side trips on freeway and backroads and then the fastest route home.

I decided to reset the mileage indicator at each fill up to see what each tank gave mileage wise and refilled at 1/4 tank. I wanted to try premium to see if it gave better mileage or not and was very surprised at the results. Because of the results I skipped the middle octane test. Coming home we had to buck heavy winds so gas mileage suffered some but the XC handled like a dream. so here are the results.

87 octane - 24.7 mpg - straight/rolling country road 60-70 mph
87 octane - 25 mpg - 1/3 winding mountain road - 35-40 mph, 2/3 open highway& I-25 70-80mph
91 octane - 23.5 mpg - 1/3 Rolling country road - 35-40 mph, 2/3 Interstate 75 mph
86 octane - 24 mpg - Interstate 70-80mph w/headwinds (first 30 mi got 26+ mpg)
86 octane - 26.5 mpg - Interstate and Open country road 60-80 mph.

I was hesitant to use 86 octane but there was a little 91 left to boost it up 8-) Seems like the New Mexico stations sell 86/88/91 while Arizona has 87/89/91 - don't know if there really is a difference but there sure was a big difference in the mileage using lower octane. I may repeat the 91 test locally to see if that was a fluke or not.

If you were getting 24-26 from your '99 XC, I would expect very similar results from your '06 - same driver, environment, etc. We got about the same 24-26 from our '98 XC on open road trips here in northeast (not open/ flat like the southwest, etc of course). Our '07 XC70 is still too new for a solid reading at 1200 miles, but so far, on a 500 mile run up into the Maine mountains and back, we got about 24. Interestingly, the first tank, supplied by dealer, only got about 19, on open highway. As soon as I put in mid-grade-89, mileage jumped to 23+. I mean just as soon as it leeft the gas station. Don't know just what was in there at first, or how old it could have been for an '07 delivered 9/1/06.
