Engine going off after idling

Post by Rocketman »

Dear all,

I have a 850 GLT (5 cyl 125 kW engine) Sedan from 1993 and got it second hand in late 2000 when it had 125000 km. Meanwhile it has completed 236000 km. Had a few repairs but nothing too serious (thermostat, power antenna, MAS.)

Over the last couple of months though the engine goes off there and then after idling, or having driven at low power (even at low speeds on the motorway.) I have the impression this is worse after heavy rains or otherwise having been in wet conditions. Immediate restart is not possible - engine turns, all ok but even if it does come on it runs very irregularily and dies off (too rich mixture issue??). It will restart and run fine after a minute or a little bit longer but obviously this can be highly inconvenient in some situations. Would you suggest to search for dirt somewhere, creep or humidity in the electronics, or so? Any help welcome.

Thanks, and have a nice weekend

PJ

I'd suggest jumpering the fuel pump relay to see if it's your problem.

Remove the cover from your upper fuse panel near the windshield (3 screws around the edges), pull out relay #103, and stick a paperclip or piece of wire between pins 15 and 87.
