Tackling car problems with a sense of humor. I like your style!

There are two methods to go about the flex pipe - have an exhaust shop weld a similar one in place, or replace the entire exhaust manifold with an aftermarket one (OBX, for instance).

Im having a similar problem, which i think is from drag on the SERP belt. I notice it when i turn on my headlights, run the AC compressor (Especially) I am also having very hard starts about 4-6 seconds, Typically, I can start up on first turn. the weather is getting a bit chilly here..
Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

looks like a good discussion going on here - on the topic of the MAF in may case, it is a replacement part from the previous owner - i am concerned now that it might not be the correct part number as i have read that they are quite picky - is there any way (other than calling the extremely unhelpful local dealer) of findind the correct part number for my particular car???

93-94's apparently look like this and don't come in the whole tube assembly:

http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/p ... 28Bosch%29

Part numbers: 1366220, 0280217002

All you should really be concerned with - does it say Bosch!?

some conflicting info from FCP - your reference quotes part no: 1366220, 0280217002 from FCP Groton but FCP Euro quotes part no.: 1275749, 0280217107 , W0133-1600936 - why is there a difference? is it simply the housing which comes with the FCP Euro part?

Oh, you're right - I didn't see in your signature that you have a 94 turbo - just saw '94' at the right.

The one I put up is for a 93-94 non-turbo. Ignore that.

makes sense - will try one from the wreckers before thinking about ordering a new part - things are much better now with all of the repairs and only noticeable when cold under load - will update ...

My 94 turbo has the same thing going on. I was thinking that the fuel injection was hunting for the correct mixture, leading me to think it was an O2 senser.

while doing some unrelated work (oil change and drain and refilll tranny) on the weekend i tried disconnecting the MAF again and driving uphill under load (when problem is most noticeable) - it would appear that the demon has yet to be vanquished - surge is still evident and worst at around 2500 rpm

car idles fine even when cold with none of the surging that one would expect if the IAC was bad - IAC has disctinctive hum/buzzing but from what i have read this is normal and should not affect performance

any ideas on what else i can look at????

IAC valve shouldn't cause any of that.

When's the last time you changed plugs? When my gap was off, I could feel the car stumbling around, but it was at a higher RPM.

O2 sensor could still be a candidate for surging behavior.
