Problems with mixing OEM coils with Bosch?

Post by drkaeppel »

Hey everyone,

I drive a 1999 S70 Non-Turbo. This afternoon my CEL came on. Rough idle, loss of power. I had the codes read at O'reilly's and it came up with P0303 and P1081, which indicated a cylinder 3 misfire. I went to the dealership and bought a new set of spark plugs ($30) and an ignition coil ($92). New plug and new coil in cylinder 3 and everything seems to be working smoothly again. Heading back to O'reilly's tomorrow to see if the CEL codes will clear. However, in an attempt to prevent this from happening again in the near future I am going to go ahead and replace the rest of the plugs and coils.

The OEM coil I purchased from the dealership was $92. I see I can buy Bosch coils for about $50 each from FCPgroton. Will I possibly run into any issues with having two different types of ignition coils? (1 OEM and the rest Bosch)

Just a thought: Ignition coils fail here and there, I have never really heard of them failing all at once like due to age. I have 2 cars with coil packs, each of them had 1 coil fail something like 3-5 years ago but no other coil issues between the 2 vehicles. If you want to be preventive then maybe just pick up one Volvo coil and keep it in the garage. Even then, I would predict it could be a long time before you need it, so why not have them hold it for you down at the dealership.

Just my $0.02.

Thanks for the replies.

erikv11- Definitely a good point and you are probably right. I've owned the car for about a year and I know the previous owner did basically nothing but oil changes to the car (76,000 over 11 years), so I've spent the last year or so getting it caught up on basic maintenance. Replacing all the coils I guess is more for my own peace of mind. I will be taking a road trip next month to CO so I guess I'm just trying to minimize the possibility of another CEL on the road.

Can't beat peace of mind and knowing the status of those parts under the hood :)

Just installed new spark plugs and Bosch ignition coils. Threads on the original spark plugs were a little corroded, it's possible that they were original. Took a little less than an hour to get it all done and she's running great! I took it for a test drive and noticed that start up was quicker. Idle and acceleration seemed a little quieter and smoother as well.
