bad oil leak

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Question, can oil spill out around the filler cap? Or is this an internal pressure thing?

You mean past the rubber gasket? Yes, that valve cover has the cams moving just below that and throwing oil everywhere. If that seal isn't tight oil will leak out.

I believe I've found the culprit. A couple of the bolts that hold down the head near the spark plugs were loose. I removed them and oil was present. This is a little disturbing but I cleaned the screw, coated the bolt in sealant and re-tightened it. Shall take her for a test run today.

You mean the bolts that are holding the cam cover correct? I wouldn't be concerned with them being loose. There is no gasket between the cam cover and the head, so that seems like it would cause the issue. Those bolts should be at 13 ft/lbs so not overly tight anyway, since you don't want to strip the aluminum head.
