Transmission slipping in REVERSE

Post by mushie1uk »

:?: So after just having a whole bunch of work done on my car, the mechanic mentions my tranny slips in reverse :O I too had previously noticed this but never gave it much attention other than telling my husband reverse feels different, but he knows as much as me! Im at my wits end with this car. The volvo technician mentioned he'd never before seen this happen with just reverse, and he'd try to do some research on it. Bottom line thou, replacing or rebuilding tranny is more than the cars value. But would like to know if anyone else has had this problem? Also if anyone has a clue as to a timeline on how much longer I can run this car before tranny completely goes?
You can view my other post on problems leading up to this one at https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=42967

Thanks

Yep, just last year.
Pretty soon thereafter the entire tranny just gave out
Needs a rebuild or a new or used one installed

Once again, it really helps to know the year and MILEAGE

Happens to Chryslers all the time. It's pretty much the end of the line for the transmission, unfortunately.

You can TRY changing the fluid out completely and see if it will buy you any extra time, but chances are it won't last long.

I was out on a job site with one of our work vans (a Plymouth Voyager) that had been slipping in reverse for a few weeks and others had mentioned it, though it drove and shifted great in Drive. It was muddy and I managed to get it stuck in a rut in a driveway, and the 2nd time I tried to rock it back in reverse (gently - I wasn't slamming the gas or anything), the transmission just let go right there and wouldn't move in either direction.

I'm sorry, I didn't mention make & model as its at the side under my name.. But its a 1999 V70XC with 142xxx on it.
The mechanic said rebuilding would cost $3300 then with 10-12 hours labour on top.. Cant I (if possible) pull one at the scrappy, then have it installed :?:

Correct, most trannies just get replaced. Find a reputable yard and have them deliver a tranny to your mechanic. A good tranny will be covered for at least one year. The replacement is not an easy job, but your mechanic should be able to R&R in less than 1 day.

You have a 4 speed tranny, which is cheaper and more reliable than the 5 speed. If the ATF is brown or black, a flush 'might' help. The ATF fluid is DexIII. The dipstick for the tranny has a yellow handle, drivers side of the engine bay, just behind the radiator, under the air intake.

Where are you located?
in a metro area
Cottman Transmission here (Eastern PA) does a one year/12,000 mi. guaranteed rebuild INCLUDING LABOR for about 25-$2700
Buy a used trans for anywhere from 500-$800 then spend another $1000 for install and it's still a crapshoot!!!
These are all pretty old now and finding one with good miles is getting tougher each day

You'll also need to find a 1999-2000 AWD transmission, which could make matters a bit more difficult. 2000 4-speed AWD's will work; 2000 5-speeds (from an R) will not.

(IM IN SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA)

Im just guessing 'ATF' = automatic transmission fluid??? My Volvo mechanic checked that fluid today and kinda made a face indicating that it looked ok? Just looked brown (and normal) to me.

He also gave the advice about flushing the fluid. He also mentioned he has a customer who comes in for his oil changes, but u-turns first, so when the works done he can drive straight, BECAUSE for over a year his reverse has been out.. LOL. That comforted me a little.. I'm just so scared of driving and anxiously waiting the transmission falling apart. Today when I reversed outta driveway, it seemed fine, it rolled, didn't really need gas.. I do hear the stranger, louder noise thou when switching into reverse. The volvo guy, said he's a tranny for my car, would give me for $800 and labour $1100.. Or I should just sell the car for $2200, which is never gonna work, although i've put all the other parts in it, its also a salvaged title, always a harder sell. I'm feeling if i can pay $2000 for tranny and work, and get maybe 3 years outta this thing then i've done good. Silly me didn't ask how many miles are on that tranny or what kinda warranty comes with. So will call tomorrow to find out.
I also called the guy down the street who has machine for flushing, and he told me theres no point in doing it with 142000 miles on my car :( Said i'd just be wasting my money.

So now, again, we have to save the $$$ before any more work gets done, hopefully my car holds it together till then!!!

DO NOT EVER USE A FLUSH MACHINE ON ONE OF THESE TRANSMISSIONS!!! They are bad, evil things.

Still, I'd try the fluid change before dropping money on a new transmission. For $40 of fluid, you can change it all out yourself - I promise, it's really not hard for even a person who has no idea what they're doing.

I've done this 3x now; it takes like 20 minutes.

I had reverse go out on mine. From when I first noticed it till I lost it all together was about 6 months. I replaced it with a used trans from a reputable scrap yard. That one lasted 2 years. I decided to try and fix the original trans since I only lost reverse in that one. When I opened it up it turned out the clutch material on the intermediate band failed and flaked off the band in large strips and started to clog the filter. I was able to rebuild it with all new clutch packs, a new band, and filter. The trans is very strong and shifts perfectly now. Total parts cost was only about $350 from Rockauto.com.
