Car turns over, but wont start :(

Post by Apex91 »

Hey all, just picked up a lil project off craigslist, 95 850 wagon, only $500 :D

Ofc it has some flaws, taillights super oxidized, tranny fluid/oil black, intake hose had taped over holes in it that had him spuddering on the drive home, maitnance records show no love since 30k, im at ~130k currently.

Anywho, the thing ran strong after replacing the intake hose and maf, so I went to replacing the other parts, fuel filter, plugs wires, heres when my problem started. I replaced the fuel filter and plugs/wires and went to fire it up, but no dice, engine turns over, but nothing happens. I figured I may have had the plug wires plugged wrong and the previous owner just recently replaced the distributor cap/rotor so I figured id start there. I set the motor to TDC by hand and removed the cap and inspected the rotor, everything was where it should have been so I plugged everything up and tried again, same thing, engine tries to start, rotates but nothin.

Something odd happened while I was trying to start it after setting TDC, there was a pop and I saw smoke coming from my cone filter, I thought maybe the maf popped? so I took off the filter/maf and the smoke was coming from inside the intake, after blowing some out I opened the TB by hand and saw more smoke coming from inside the mani O.o it didnt smell real strong and afterwords when I tried to start it again it went back to turning over, this time no pops or smoke... not too sure what happened there.

Any ideas as to whats goin on? I have no cel either...

maybe a fuel supply problem - is it possible that you installed the fuel filter backwards?? it's easy enough to do and the lack of pressure may cause the no-start issue ... check the pressure on the rail (schrader valve) if you have fuel i'd go back the spark issue and test each plug individually against the block

Since this is new to you you may not have the answer but what method did you use to determine the spark plug wire locations on the distributor cap. The Haynes manual is dead wrong - this is correct.

Woa. yeah thats prolly it haha. im gonna put them in that order and try again in the morning. Today I took out the plugs and plugged em up to the wires and had a friend turn the car over with the plugs/wires out of the car and I couldnt see any spark at the plugs. Maybe it was the lighting? but I feel like I should have been able to see the plugs spark if they were sparking.

Im going to run a voltmeter over the ICM tomorrow the make sure if switching the wires around doesnt solve the issue, maybe im overthinking, but the old wires were the original oem ones, same with the plugs, they were worn so bad when I checked the gab it was over .55 could the new wires/plugs maybe been too much for the ICM? like, it was so used to the old amount of current being able to pass through that all the new popped it?

Either way thanks alot for that im gonna update you guys tomorrow :) Ive got plans for this thing ha
