I am looking at two Volvos: 1. V70 XC 1998 84000 mls, 2. V70 AWD 1998 79000 mls. Is there any difference as far as reliability is concerned or should I be worried about the year? The dealer gives a 3 month 4500 mile warranty with both.
Thanks for any advice...javascript:emoticon(':?:')

Same.
Look for AWD system issues by checking tires for different sizes. Look at tire purchase hisrtory. Also, listen to the car as you're driving it. Listen for clicking, grinding... bad automotive sounds coming from the drivetrain.
The AWD systems until 2003 were very sensitive to a variety of factors, and the result is abig repair bill.
I wouldn't get a pre-2003 AWD Volvo, but if you can find one with a good history, you'll be better off.

Yes, oil and spark plugs are easy on 850s/70s/XCs.
