99 s80 t6 rolling noise? Support bearing or ???

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

99 s80 t6 rolling noise? Support bearing or ???

Post by dcarlson12 »

99 S80 T6, approx. 130,000 miles.
Had the dealer do some repairs: replace passenger side transmission output shaft seal, turbo oil return line seals, and 'PCV' system.
Since then I believe the rolling noise has increased. Possibly just coincidental and with this car one is always waiting for something new to fail.... :?
I did a replacement of the driver's side/left front wheel bearing some time ago.
It had the typical growling sound which increased when I would make a wide right turn.

The present 'noise' does NOT seem to change for either left or right turns.

When I have driven on the freeway and then exit to a residential road and make a very slow right turn on a slight uphill turn off it almost sounds more like a very small wop, wop sound which goes away after the turn in completed.

I had the car up on ramps and dropped the plastic 'cover' and examined the CV joint bellows on the right side and all looked ok.
I did this to also check if the leaks had actually been properly repaired by the dealer.

Wondering it they could have some how screwed up the support bearing which is located between the viscous coupling and the CV joint when they did the transmission seal replacement. There were no apparent signs of damage.

The next time I do an oil change, I plan to check if the support bearing is warm/hot.

Has anyone had the support bearing fail? If so, what symptoms?

An update: Well the noise seemed to be getting louder. Had my brother in law sit in the passenger seat and he said he thought is was just 'road noise'.
Since then I have been driving in my wife's 97 850 and our 2009 Chevy Astro and they definitely did not have such a degree of 'road noise'.
Took the S80 to an independent transmission shop and the owner was nice enough to take it for a test drive to listen. I sat in the passenger seat and could hardly hear anything and he said there definitely was noise coming from the left front.
I told how I had changed the left front hub/bearing assembly only about one or two years ago. He said that the left bearing is the one which fails most frequently.
To shorten the story, I ordered a new hub/bearing assembly from Autopartsway.ca
On their site it says that the bearing/hub is a "Ruville" Front Axle Hub Assembly. Their part number is RUV190386.
I see that IPD has the same assembly listed. The cost would have been almost the same after border charges, etc.
I gather that Ruville is supposed to be OEM. Now going back I see that IPD has another unit listed as Volvo OE. I didn't see this until now when I went to their site a second time. It is about $40 more. If the second/present unit fails as quickly as the last one, I will probably go with the Volvo OE unit. i.e. assuming I still have the car :?
When I received the unit from Autopartsway.ca, it was labeled as FAG along with the FAG part number, etc.
This is rather disappointing because I replaced the same (left front) hub assembly only about 20,000 miles ago. The original hub/bearing assembly had lasted about 111,000 miles i.e. about 5 times longer i.e. I was hoping to get something other than FAG. But I now understand FAG is made my Ruville...
I was hoping to get an SKF unit but couldn't find one anywhere. Perhaps the Volvo OE is an SKF?
I have installed the FAG with the hope that it will have a longer life than the first FAG.
In any case, the 'road noise' has gone away. The FAG appears to be made in Germany as per the label on the box and thus I would expect good quality but it has no identifying marks so who knows. One never knows if there are counterfeits out there.

I have to say that http://www.autopartsway.ca/ was quite accommodating because I initially ordered the rear hub assembly because I was concentrating on the name SKF and didn't see that the SKF is only available for the rear. They appear to be agreeing to take back the rear hub assembly simply by me refusing to accept the shipment from UPS.
