What kind of car is this as far as reliability, fixability etc. I'm looking at one with 100K miles and a very good interior and body but in truth, I know little about the 164 line. I'm trying to get a feel from the group relative to the desirability of this old beast. I'd rather find an old 122 but they are pretty scarce. I do own a Volvo now, a V70 and 5 other cars. Short of painting a car, I've probably done everything at least once.
Thanks

As you already know, except for the 1800 series, Volvos are not highly sought after cars demanding a good price. The 164 is every bit as reliable as the 144, but with a straight 6. If it is a 4 speed, buy it. The automatic BW35 is not the best tranny ever designed.
Parts are available, most engine parts are interchangeable with the 144. Not as 'sexy' as the 122!

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

I have a 4-speed '71 164 and it's been very reliable for me. I bought it for around $500 and after getting it running it blew the head gasket. That cost about $900 to fix but they did all the valve work, replaced all the gaskets, etc at the same time. Since then it's just been solid as a rock. At highway speeds it seems to just float down the road and it's a real joy to drive.
I'm pleased there is a forum for these cars! I haven't worked on mine for a while but I'm inspired to get back into it. It needs various things here and there.

That's a nice one Burnout. There are a few sites online for help with the 164. Take a look at http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?model=140-160
The format may look old, but the folks are quite knowledgable and very helpful.
I normally do not direct people to other web sites, and I do like this one, but there is really very little traffic for the older Volvos.
