5th tire and rotation procedure

Just put on new tires on my 50K mile 2008 xc90. In the event I damage a tire, I'd like to avoid having to by a new set of w2 or 4, so I purchased a 5th tire that I plan to rotate into the mix at intervals that insure even wear. Has anyone done this before and what is the best procedure or rotation schedule?
