No Reverse 2004 XC90

Post by jbcxc90 »

My revrse gear does not engage. All other geears engage smoothly and quietly. Park is functional. Rear radar is functional and operates. Volvo dealer said I should replace the transmission. I think not. Any ideas or experience with this problem?

Check the fuse! Sometimes it is that simple. I may be wrong, but so much depends on the electrical working, and the fuses are great places to start. Check in the manual to learn which box (front engine compartment or rear cargo area) is the one that has tranny functionality.

Hope that's it!

What engine is in your XC90?

The first thing to check would be the transmission fluid level. Have there been any indications that anything was wrong before it lost reverse?

Hey thanks for replying!
Motor is the T6 Executive version. I assume the gearbox is the GM but can't see it from the open hood ...
Nothing suspicious with the car running, no. Only rear gear failed to engage two times. First with a cold motor the day after I got the car (tested it rightaway I got it a d everything was ok). Stepped in the gas and finally got it moving.
And second time was right before giving out, after forcing it. This got stuck like this after I force the car on the ramp at my house's entrance (transmission check showed up at that time -assume hot tranny oil- then didn't showed again after read)

Prev owner told me the car was parked for about six months because on sale.
Don't know the state of the gearbox oil neither.
Message screen shows no messages. Check light is off (car is parked. Don't know if something will show up when running).
Engaging rear gear is the same as neutral, the car runs loose.

I'm assuming a failing solenoid plus dirty oil and a stuck valve to begin with ...

It is the GM 4T65EV/GT

No Reverse: is almost always badly burned 2nd clutches that have warped and even welded themselves together.

Get the truck scanned with VIDA-DiCE. Until you get the codes you are pretty much spinning your wheels.
