I have had 2 issues trying to start my V70, 2.4T, once in the morning and once in the afternoon about two weeks apart. I turned the key and just got a clunk. The electrical system is working fine. The first time it only happened once the second time it happened 3 times .... the clunk that is. Each time it eventually started. I think it may be the starter. Another thought is the battery battery is about 4 years old and my not have enough starting amps.
I have searched the forum looking for how to for starter replacment for the P2, V70, but was unable to finde something. Can someone direct me and recomend where to get a starter?
Thanks in advance
V70 2003 Starting issue 125K
OK. I replaced the starter. Simple job, but very cramped...all-in-all it took me about 1.5 hours.
Here is the deal though. When I started it after I had everything back together. It had the same symptoms....Sounds like the starter is trying to engadge, stops. I tried to start it about 6 times nothing. On the 7th try it fired right up. I don't think it was the starter.
I did have Autozone check the old starter and it checked OK. So that means the problem is someplace else. I also had them check the battery and it checked OK. They aslso conducted a check of the charging system and it checked OK.
Any suggestions?

When you start the car and you've got a click click click and then your car starts, i'm 100% positive it's your battery.
Check the connections from the starter to the battery to make sure that they are not arcing. This means at the both battery terminals, the + jump post in the engine bay, the grounds from the battery and in the engine bay. This could be your problem. Glück.

Thanks J3T
Both battery and charging system are OK. All connections are tight and no signs of arcing or corrosion. Even the ground strap that connects the engine to the dash panel looks good....No signs of corrosion, or acring.

If you are getting a strong started clunk it sounds like you are getting power to the starter. It is weird that you do not get a start after putting in a new starter. When my kid had a no start issue with the 2001 V70 I ended up directly jumping to the starter and it worked every time. It was none of the issues I was told about but in the end the solenoid connection small wire. It was a bit loose and some corrosion on it. It was a pain to get to but I cleaned it up and squeezed the connector to make it a bit tighter. Have not had a problem since.
When you run into the problem again, try jumping the small solenoid connection with the hot starter wire. I did this with a long screw driver wrapped in black tape on the steel shaft except for about 50mm at the tip. I touched the two connections with the metal tip and the starter would work. So went backwards from there. I pull the wire from the solenoid wire, hooked up a light to check for voltage when cranking. the light lit every time. This is when the connection had to be the issue.
If you direct jump your starter and you have the same issue, there is something wrong with the starter or even the flywheel. If the starter starts every time when jumping, the issue is somewhere else. If you have a manual you can put the car in 5th gear, take the brake off, push the car forward while in gear a foot or so, and then see if the call will start. This changes the location of the flywheel where the starter engages. However, starters usually make a grinding sound when not engaging not just a clunk. Glück.

Vielen Dank J5T!!
I'm sure I'm getting power to the starter and there is no grinding sound. The old starter and the flywheel did not show any abnormal signs of wear. As a matter fact, both the flywheel and starter gear looked like new .... nice corners on the teeth.
I will try your suggestion and see what happens.
