Greetings

Post by 2002S4019T »

Just purchased my first Volvo auto, a 2002 S40 1.9T. with 166000mi. Found that the heater core was leaking when I got the car home but I like the car so much I have decided to have it fixed and keep it. Service engine is also on but very happy with the features of the car and how it performs. More gadgets than expected from what I had always thought of as a practical type car but they all seem to work and I am very much enjoying them. Hope to find some helpful information here and hopefully I can return some as well.

Welcome!

Find out if the timing belt was ever changed. Mine broke at 166k and I had to rebuild the head. They recommend the change at 105k.

Yes, good advise, the volvo dealer had a record of it's replacment at 107000mi. so we did dodge that bullet but unfortunatly it hit us in the heater core instead.

Welcome to MVS. :)

Did you get the service history when you brought the car? Also, do you happen to have any pictures to share with us?

Records from the previous owner are sporatic. I plan on taking photos later today after a wash and wax but first I'm chaning oil & filters. Have never seen an oil filter like this one.

Car looks to be in great shape. How bad are the service records? Does it look like the car has received the major maintenance?

Just a few invoices I found in the glove box and some doodleing in the owners manual. Prevous owner was female. I called the dealership for info on the timing belt. New heater core has been installed. Everything seems to work fine. Runs and drives very well. One noisy strut. Faint grinding noise at first start up in the morning. Brakes work fine but must be cheap pads, lots of brake dust on wheels. Getting the coolant out of the carpet has been a process. Still adding water to the system but don't see any leaking, havn't figured that out yet. But we are driving it everyday and on one trip. It does everything a car is supposed to do quite well. 28mpg. I like it as much as I thought I would.
