240 radio mounting puzzle

Post by dmg4 »

After disconnecting the battery on my sons 1992 240 to service the instrument cluster, the radio requested a security code. The one that I got using the VIN didn't work, so I had to pull the radio to get the serial and model number to submit to a dealership to get the correct code.

Now I know why the original radio wasn't there. It looks like someone actually stole a Volvo radio (see...it CAN happen). In fact, it appears that it was unceremoniously ripped out of the dash. My replacement Volvo radio (CR 814) is just sitting behind the faceplate. All of the mounting hardware, braces, locking clips, etc are GONE. It looks like previous owner tried to epoxy it to the plastic surround. As the radio weighs about 5 lbs, that probably held for about 10 minutes. Now it sits about 1/4 inch forward of it flush position. It works, but it looks dodgy.

Any suggestions on a fix for this condition. Is the supporting hardware easy to re-attach, assuming I can find a source? Alternatively, has anyone developed a workaround for broken mounts? I guess I could wrap the radio in fiberglass batting and bubble plastic and stuff it back in the dash, but I'd prefer something a little less trashy.

Ah well. I worked out a Mickey Mouse solution. I rolled up some closed cell foam used for heating pipe insulation to make some cylindrical pads. One roll was used under the radio to provide support of its weight, and a second roll was placed behind it to keep it pressed against the faceplate. It took a bit of trial and error to get the diameter of each roll just right, but not more than 10 minutes. Drove about 60 miles afterwards, and it seems to be stable. This will work as a temporary fix until some forum member comes up with a more elegant solution.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Seems like a reasonable Heath Robinson affair. You may be able to pick up the correct parts from a breaker's yard.
