Roof rail mouldings

Post by steve »

Has anyone replaced their roof mouldings? It runs up the front pillar and along the edge of the roof to the rear of the back doors. Mine have lost all of their black paint. Can these be repainted or is it wiser/easier to replace them. The dealer wanted a fortune the last time I checked two years ago.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

for black plastics like bumpers, door handles, mirrors and roof rails i use the black liquid polish that you use on shoes. It looks great is water resistant, cheap, and can be applied really easy. The first few times it may look poor but give it a few good coats and it'll come up like magic. Give it a shot.

volvospeed forum users use black electrical tape. if properly done, cannot be seen unless you lookout for it.

Seems it is quite lasting too. renew every year..what the heck...electrical tape is damn cheap.

To Pete,

how long have u used the shoe polish?

I gather the shoe polish is acidic. Eats into any plastic rapidly. Plastic crumbles soon thereafter. happened to quite a few of my friends.

Anyway keep us posted on the condition of the plastic when using shoe polish.

I would only recommend bumper paints as sold in accessory shops to reduce risk.

Ive been using liquid shoe polish for years. its just a black liquid that can be polished off and wiped off when wet, but once dry is of a shinny nature that looks great. it only forms a thin coat on the applied surface thats why a few applications are nessecary on a new unfinished surface.

The roof mouldings I was speaking of are aluminum. The shoe polish may not adhere to it. I'll try the black electrical tape first and let you know how it works.

Thanks.
