1st time Volvo owner needing help

Post by Tsar »

Hi everyone,, Sorry for the long first post

Bought a 1997 V40 t-4 , 5 speed thru a friend. Essentialy it for my Fiancae's Bday a week ago and we get married in 3 weeks.

Anyhows, thing was fine until Monday just gone and it shuts down to 2 cylinders blowing black smoke typical MAF sensor as described all over the net. However some clown at Volvo convinced me it was coils over the phone so bought those and did not fix the problem.

Got a guy out to hook up a laptop to diagnose. The following faults were found
0013 Maf sensor
0019 torque reduction
0017 somethihng about fuel
0078 engine speed sensor.

This monkey charges $100 and leaves fixing nothing grrrr.

Anyhows ran into a Volvo Mech of 25 yrs gave him the run down, told him I pull off the MAf sensor lead and it comes good yadda yadda.

So buy a maf sensor off him and fit.....
GGRRRRR same friggin thing running on 2 at times 3 and soon as I pull the Maf lead off it runs ok again all be it prob guess 75% of normal.

From what I have researched sounds like my ECU is dead or dying. Or ?? do I need to do a proper reset on the ECU, could it be something else.

Any help appreciated, the mrs is going balistic at the money spent already on the POS and not having a car to drive, and a wedding 3 weeks away money is friggin tight now.

cheers for listening

All good problem solved, radiator was replaced 10 days ago, the bottom clamp of the inter cooler pipe had worked loose or not fitted properly, refitted and clamped down runs sweet now.

cant clear the service light though even after leaving battery off for half hour

Glad you got it all figured out. Check the topic at the top of the main S40 page. It tells you how to reset.
