dash light malfunctioning/ 1997 960

Post by turkroyal420 »

hi!
i have a 1997 960 wit 180k miles on it! i usually do all the work on it myself, however, this is my last option to hear from you guys before i take her to the dealership!
my dash lights kept goin out, i would replace the fuse and they would stay on for bout ten seconds and the fuse would get burned out again. i must have changed this fuse like 20 times. the last time i changed the fuse they stayed on for 5 minutes and they went off again, this last time i smelled burned wire and smoke! i have no idea what burned and where it took place!

All of my dash lites inc: all the meters, my climate control lites, heated seat lites, transmittion gear indicator lites, ashtray lites(front and back) are out!
it really sucks drivin at nite! so please let me know if anyone can help me out wit this annoying problem!
Thanx

It sounds like you have a short. Because of the burning wire thing it shouldn't be too hard to find. I would pull the gage cluster if it is easy in your car and inspect the wiring. You may be able to do it from under the dash. A volvo wiring diagram from volvo technical publications is a big help on what goes to what and what voltage you should measure. They are expensive about $30 for my car but after using it I think it is worth 3 or 4 times that. They are the best wiring diagrams that I have seen. Good luck.
