I second this post and can tell you that what he says is true. My 240, 940 and 850 were all tanks and could take one hell of a beating. All I did on them was normal maintenance and they all had well into the 200K mile range.

Having owned every model Volvo from 140 up to S80 in our family (currently on my 2nd S70T) and just about every other car made I have to report that I have done the same thing several times over the years and usually regretted it.- As the other guys have said, the only one I would touch would be the 240s but a good one would be nearly impossible to find. Best post so far - buy a Camry. You will get a more modern one and they never go wrong.
good luck

+1 on the 240 and 940 being great cars. Total old school. Aside from that, they are easy to work on.

You all are fantastic as always. Great feedback and thanks very much for giving me specific models to look for. I'll also compare with comparably priced camrys and accords as suggested.

A few friends also made a suggestion that never occurred to me. Since I was looking for additional cash for the next ~6 months, I can always consider a credit card or two with the 0% intro apr. I have managed to avoid having a cc for more than 30 years, but as I tend to be a financially conservative person, getting a couple credit cards may be a wiser solution than taking risks with an older car right this moment.

+1 that it's probably not the greatest risk in the long term.

+1 that the 240 was the longest-lived machine ever to put rubber on asphalt.

That said, the golden years for the P80 platform were the 1996 and 1997 850, and the 1998 S70/V70.

You could do that, but it will definitely hurt your credit from all the inquires. Also, you need to make sure that all the credit cards are payed off before the 6 month 0% ends. Otherwise, they will hit you with all the interest from day one to whatever you balance is.

I would think even a personal loan would be better then credit cards.

I absolutely loved my old 240 Wagon. It was incredibly durable. I drove it for 18 years and put 412,000 miles on it. The only reason I had to part with it was that it wouldn't pass the State's Inspection. The only thing holding up the roof was the windshield. Other than that, the car started every day and only required normal maintenance. I would always offer advice to go with a older Volvo. Best of luck.
