740 clunking noise in rear end while tires spinnig

Hi
My 91 740 while spinning on ice/snow produces a clunking noise from the rear end in both forward and reverse gears.
It only clunks like this while tires are spinning.
What may be causing this and cost to repair?

Clunks once in each direction?
If it has the locking differential it will clunk when it locks after one wheel overspeeds the other.

Thanks for your response.
It does not just clung once. It clunks constant while spinning. Sorta like I clunk per wheel revolution.

Have a look at the rear axle from the rear of the car. You may be lucky and find that the axle type plate is still attached to the driver's side of the axle. If it is and is marked 1031 it is not a locking diff. If it is marked 1041 it is a locking diff. The oil is the same for both.
