Volvo S60 2002 converting from AWD to FWD

Post by Ericks60 »

I have a Volvo S60 2002 AWD the angle gear just went out and so did the drive shaft the repair is way more expensive than what my car is worth so i don't think i will be paying to fix that problem, i was reading a few post about older volvos and the fact that you can actually convert it to FWD by just removing the drive shaft, is this possible on my particular volvo? or what are other ways to fix the problem without having to pay so much. Thank you for reading :)

Probably but you may get some codes, being the Haldex is electronic....and then maybe not!

Ive read on some of these forums that the drive components in an AWD system are built to distribute the drive load evenly and if you remove the rear drive from angle gear the increased load on your FWD drive-line components greatly shortens service life.

In the case of this S60, they made hundreds of thousands as FWD models with the same gearbox and these have very good longevity. Longevity of front tires may be less since spirited driving will be sending it all to the fronts.
If you remove the driveshaft and leave the AOC unit in the car the DEM will be there and no codes will be set anywhere.

WHat happened to the angle gear?
If it is broken in such a way that it needs to be removed then there are complications. The angle gear carries the seal to keep ATF from leaking out of the hole where axle inserts and some things have to be done to fix that if the angle gear can't stay.

I just this summer replaced the tranny in a 2002 xc70. The angle gear and the trans are completely sealed independently. From what I have seen is that the angle gear could be removed and use the same right side front half shaft. Not sure what if anything needs to be done with rear mount. I cannot remember but I think that there was not any attaching points on the angle gear.

i noticed a lot of fluid leaking from it and also on snow the rear tires were not spinning at all like an AWD should i brought it in to the dealer and all they said was that the angle gear was shot and needed to be replaced same as the drive shaft but they did not say why or if it was new seals their fix is to just replace the unit so I'm not exactly sure if the seals are just busted or if the gears them selfs are done
