Spoko spoko. From left to right on the engine, the cylinders are 1,2,3,4, and 5. Now on the distributor cap, the top most terminal is 4, to the left and down is 5, down one is 1, over 2, above that is 3. I have a picture sitting in front of me and it makes it so easy to understand, I just can't find a picture online. If you have a Haynes Manual it is right before chapter 1.
I just looked at that link and it is different from what Haynes says, oh well.

Really? Is that common knowledge? Glad I found that out.

It is indeed dead wrong. Even the factory service manual pinned here has the firing order rotation backwards. The link on VS is spot on correct.

The link has changed, it is now:
http://volvospeed.com/volvo_repairs_how ... plugs.html
In case you are curious, the order on the cap from the 12 O'Clock position in clockwise order:
3,5,4,2,1
Where the block is numbered 1-5 from left to right when standing in front of the engine, and #1 is the longest wire.

This is easily the most confusing thread I have read on MVS. Fortunately for me though, some kind soul wrote the firing order in sharpie pen on the old distributor cap I took off of my '96 850 Turbo T5. I have to agree with mjschneider's comment: The correct firing order (on my car, anyway) is, clock wise from 12 o'clock: 3, 5, 4, 2, 1. I am going to write the firing order on the new distributor cap tomorrow, for future reference, and I would recommend the same to anyone doing this job. I wish I'd replaced the cap with a Bosch distributor cap, the old Bosch cap is much more heavy duty than the Duralast cap I bought at Auto Zone.

Best advice I've got? Change cap and wires together!
Leave the plug wires attached to the distributor when
you pull the old stuff off and you have a handy guide.
With an I5, you really can't mess the order up using that method.
And if you need new wires, you could probably use a fresh cap, too.
At the very least, you can take a picture. Pics are very handy.
