severe vibration
severe vibration
I replaced the front struts on my 2001 S80 t6, first did the right side, all went fine, then did the left side all seemed to go fine, but now when i accelerate, i get a severe vibration, that goes away as soon as i let off the accelerator, have removed the wheel and reinstalled thinking maybe that might be the problem, but did not help, vibration is on the drivers side, anyone have any ideas as to what i did wrong or what might be the problem? could there be a problem with the drive axle or the wheel bearing assembly, also when i turn the wheel to make a sharp turn, i hear the wheel rubbing on the frame, i do not understand what have i done wrong with this seemingly easy repair?

Usually the inner cv having too much play (wear) will result in an acceleration only wobble.
Inspect it for play by putting car up on ramps and turning center shaft of cv while placing hand over inner cv to feel for clicks.
If cv is bad and car is out of warranty contact Marty at
www. raxles.com
This will assure a proper replacement with proper grease and a lifetime warranty.

how hard is it to replace the axle shaft, is this something i can do myself, I've replaced one in the past, but that had bolts holding the axle to the shaft at the transmission, i don't see those bolts on my volvo

With proper tools it is an easy job. Have you used the search box above? It contains posts and pictured tutorials on the subject.
It is always wise to do that first. Lots of good advice already posted. It will save you time and you won't upset the guru's

I am no expert on this but if you didn't have the vibration before the strut change i.e. even after the passenger side was done but only after you did the driver's side, it would seem most likely that it has to do with how you did the strut replacement.
Is it possible that you may have pulled the CV joint 'apart'. I think that is possible and is cured by 'pushing it back together'. Hope there are experts who can chime in....

Post a few pics when you get a chance, check that everything is tight and make sure the axle hasn't pulled out of the trans at all.
Push the inner against the trans and make sure it seat correctly.

I had the same issue after I replaced my balljoints. Embarrassingly I haven't fixed it yet! Anyway, from what I understand, often one or more of the pins on the inner joint fall into the grease surrounding the boot when the shaft gets pulled outwards. The result is the horrid vibration you are experiencing. An experienced member here (Jimmy57?) said he had a similar issue before was was lucky enough to find the missing pin after dissasembling the shaft.
You won't need to remove teh strut, but you will most likely have to drop the balljoint on that side so you can pull the driveshaft out of the inner housing.

The inner joint may have a wear button on the end of the trunnion shaft (in my experience the S80 axles have this design but others may or may not have it). The three rollers on inner joint are trunnion rollers and the three spokes on the piece they roll on are trunnions. On some designs the end of the trunnion has a rounded end thrust pin of sorts that keeps the trunnions centered in the joint outer housing to keep the assembly from vibrating.
When you do suspension work and the axle is extended due to the splined end not being freed from hub, the trunnion is pulled out of housing and the thrust pin can fall out. It is likely floating around inside the boot.
