I also found out that another function of the new software is that it's not as sensitive.
With the original software the perameters were would so tight that if ANY minor glitch occured it would possibly throw a code and probably go into limp mode when it really wasn't necessary
It does NOT do that now, many of these were "false" and not necessary and thus caused major ($$) headaches for the most part no reason at all

gentlemen, a quick story. JRL is correct, if your car ends up on a volvo shop floor, it will get the update. I dropped mine Friday for a 'favour' - to get someone to whip in my rebuilt ABS control unit as I didn't have the time or the correct torx head. Picked the car up at 4:30 & it felt funny but what do I know - havent driven it much for 2 months as I just replaced the motor (don't ask). Soon became apparent that the car was surging, stalling - throttle response was not coresponding to inputs & it gradually became more severe...that & I burned 1/2 tank of fuel to get 60 miles. Car became undrivable yet again. I'm furious. I wasn't asked or advised of the update - this guy's my friend but all bets are off Monday morning. Software does not remedy anything - it only delays the inevitable. These cars are an embarassment! Totally undeserving of wearing the"old" Volvo nameplate.I've never been a whiner or a crusader, but I urge anyone I cross even thinking about a Volvo to run & run fast. Quite frankly after this experience with my LAST one, I strongly believe that this organization deserves to be driven under - we should DEMAND a proper repair - federally mandated full recall! I STRONGLY suggest that any one considering getting this update think about the possible downside, particularly if there are no issues currently with the car.
