Turn Steering, try start again

Post by epersons »

Parked 2008 S40 5 days ago, no problems. Today, when my son was leaving for school, steering wheel is not locked, inserted key, turned to position 3 and nothing. Got the message "Turn Steering, try start again." Tried that and nothing. Noticed the following: When the key is turned to 1 and 2, all dash light and headlights come on. At three, the headlights go off, the arm rest buttons go off and only CHECK ENGINE stays on. Once the key is released, all indicators and headlights come back on. OBD shows no codes. There is a "turn-signal" sound in the lower steering column area and a clicking under the hood. I reviewed all related posts I could find here and most related to a locked steering wheel. Mine is not locked. Put my Schumacher battery tester/charger on it and initially read 11.7 volts. Charged it for 1 hour and it reads 13.5. Still no start. Any ideas will be more than greatly appreciated.

After the battery charge and with good battery voltage try a battery reset. Disconnect the ground cable and touch it to the pos post or terminal for 5 seconds and then reconnect. Have the ignition off and key out for 5 minutes before you do this.
If this works then you may have only had a low voltage problem taking a module offline. That car doesn't actually have the electric column lock pin due to law changes eliminating the requirement but it has the module to hold its place in the network structure. The message can occur on others when the lock is physically blocked but on your car it is module error. Engine start is blocked if the system thinks you can't turn wheel, true or not.

Just yesterday my 2008 S40 did the exact same thing. You described it to a "T". All the noises and clicking. I tried the disconnecting negative and touching the positive for 5seconds and nothing happened. I also tried my other key. I am not hearing my ignition "accept" or "lockin". When I insert the key. You know the distint sound of the key locking in. Any more help or suggestions would be great.

Drove it to work with no warnings or problems and 8 hrs later.... Nothing.

Hi please can someone help. We have a c30 2009 59 plate 1.6 petrol. My wife drove the car without fault back from work last night. I woke up this morning to do the school run and the engine will not start and on display it says turn steering and try again. I have no steering lock on and can freely turn the wheels but it just will not make any effort to start. I see there has been previous posts regarding this issue but not seen any answers.

I would try to turn the wheel and remove the key until the steering wheel locks, then insert the key to unlock the wheel again. On the older cars when we had issues like this, locking and unlocking the doors with a key 3 times often cleared the immobilizer. I don't have a clue if that's it or not, but it's worth a try as well.
