Thermostat/85 760T

Post by turbo no/go »

I have the '85 760turbo from the previous post. After running the car until the gauge was about 3/4 over towards red, I never actually let it run hot, the car never has since I've owned it(2 1/2 years), but because the gauge was farther than I'd ever seen it and still slowly climbing, I would shut it off at that point and let it cool(45min.-1hr.)
Then I would check the coolant level and fill it up as needed. I repeated this process 5-6 times, this is after flushing the system w/ water, and refilling with 50/50 mix of water-antifreeze.
Today I replaced the thermostat and although the gauge climbed higher than normal, it never got as high as yesterday.I worried at first it was the water-pump, thinking the thermostat hadn't helped. After topping it off w/ coolant and letting it run idle for 45mins. , it did fine.
I'm thinking the new thermostat isn't made to open at the same temp. as the original, and it allows the car to run a little hotter, just a little over the halfway point vs. a little before the halfway point.I'm getting an 'original-part' thermostat just to make sure that's the difference in the temp.
