Blown head gasget or Something less severe?

Post by dejr1 »

: :?: mrgreen: Hello.. I am a first time owner of a 1996 960. Its only been 28 hours since i purchaed this car and i have had a most horrible experience. I was driving the car for the second time today....very strong smooth..no issues what so ever...started to climb hwy 18 towards home and temp gauge starts moving slightly right of center..then makes a bee line towards redline..cars starts losing power...I pull over..car shuts off...steam statrs coming from underhood and I open hood and take a look..and the bottom radiator hose has sprung large leak..water/steam gushing out... I go to parts store..buy new hose repplace new hose..refill overflow with one and a half gallons of water...try to start car...and it just turns over nad over...trying to start...but not quite.. I tryed this over and over over a 2 hour period on the side of the hwy...until battery went dead..had to car jumped by tow truck ...still..just turns over rapdidly as if it is out of gas...almost starting but not quite..had the car towed home....Figuring that maybe the plugs/distributers got wet...i went ahead and actually replaced the bosch plugs which looked fowled and were definately wet with carquest's equivelant nkg or nki sparkplug..it looked quite diff than the bosch's crownlike sparkplug...i dont know if that makes a difference.....anyway after installing new plugs and drying off everything The engine finally startedd after a few tries...very rough idol..noticeable engine knocking that finally subsided after a couple of minutes..and white smoke out of tailpipe..which i thought was normal because of the 40 degree weather.THEN THE engine takes a turn for the worse...idol drops...i try giving it a bit more gas and it lost all power and died...I checked to oil dip stick and it had a milky look to it as if water had gotten mixed with it? Does this mean the head gasket is blown?..or could it be something less severe...by the way...the cooling system at this time was about 90% water and 10% antifreeze
