broken timing belt 98 v70xc
broken timing belt 98 v70xc
Timing belt broke on my 98 v70xc while going about 35-40 mph. The car runs(ran) great with 160,000 miles on it. Can you fix by just replacing the belt?

Sadly no, just a belt will not fix it since it bent several valves. You won't know exactly how many valves are bent until the head comes off.
Valves can be had for around $20.00 each but they need to be lapped in to mate with the head correctly. Once the head is off a local machine shop can evaluate things and lap in new valves and pressure check the head. Alternatively you can get a re-built head from a place like Clearwater Cylinder Heads http://www.cylinder-heads.com for around $500.00. At that point you also need a new head gasket kit and new head bolts which will tack on another $300.00 or so in parts.
Replacing the head is not a small job but it really isn't a huge job either when compared to replacing a transmission or the like.
