2005 S40 Overheating?

Post by GoForVolvo »

Hi all - My 2005 S40 overheated this evening. At least, the engine acted like it was overheating - with steam and coolant/water flying out of the reservoir top. However, the temperature gauge on the dash never went past midway and no warning lights went on. I only figured it out from the strong smell of coolant wafting into my car and the eventual steam coming out of the hood. I was close to my Volvo mechanic and was able to stop for a few minutes before he closed... We couldn't quite nail the problem so I have to bring it back Monday morning, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with newer S40's overheating. He said he hasn't had a newer S40 in there for overheating before, so it's all new to him. He suspects the fan might be the problem as it wasn't activating as he'd hoped right then. He also mentioned that V70's had a recall for the fan control unit in the past and that it might be similar. Anybody familiar with this type of problem on the S40? Why didn't the temp gauge ever move up if the coolant was clearly boiling? Other possibilities that you might think could cause this?

THANKS ALL!

UPDATE: The cooling fan is entirely seized up and needs to be replaced. Early Christmas for me.
