When trouble shooting my rear view mirror switch I came across several posts asking about how to clean them. I figured I would do a write up as it was part of my ongoing trouble shooting.


First off I read some post that said you had to take the door off to get the switch out. Not for me. I simply pulled it out with my fingernail. You might want to pry it out with a cloth covered screwdriver.

Here it is out and flopping about. You might want to note how clean the switch looks compared to the window switches. This was the topic of another post. My secret to cleaning is called butcher's speedball, and a few cotton swabs. The "sticky gunk" removes quite easily with the aforementioned products.

I took pictures out of order so forgive the fact these are already out of the car... you'll have to do this in the car. Using a precision flat head screwdriver I gently pried up the edge and got it over the nubs holding the switch together.

Watch that you don't loose the white plastic contact bits when you pull the switch apart. Here's what you will be looking at once you get the switch apart.

And the other bit still attached to the door. I know the picture is blurry, and the picture really doesn't do the process justice but if you look at the left side 4 way contacts they have been cleaned with a standard pencil eraser. I saw many a post suggesting using fine grit sanding paper but the eraser cleans the contacts and will not damage the PC board coating. I also used the eraser to clean the contacts on the switch side. then after cleaning all the contacts I put on a very thin layer of dielectric grease. (still wondering if that was the proper grease choice.)

On the other side of the PC board is a connector which might be of use to you if you are doing a switch replacement, or pulling the PC board out for more extreme work.

Now reverse the order being careful of your plastic electrical contact bits. Ensure they don't go falling out of place. Snap the switch back together and re-install it into the door.

Now that I have given...
Maybe someone more knowledgeable will help me out.
It appears I have no power to this switch. I do however have power to the window switches. Anyone know where I should be looking for the loss of connection? Do I have to take the door trim off to find the next connector in line?

fuse ?

Both fuses that I figure could be appear to be fine.
14: heated rear window and door mirrors (rear defrost works)
29: Heated Rear Window, shiftlock, seat belt reminder, cruise control, heated door mirrors, bulb failure warning sensor.

other than cruise control all of fuse 29 seems to work to the best of my knowledge. I'm not entirely certain of bulb failure sensor. For that matter why do 2 fuses do the heated rear window? I'm pretty sure the mirror heat works; I just cant aim them.

The mirror switch is fed power from the power window master switch module.
If the windows work, but the power mirrors don't, check the blue wire on pin 4.
It should show 12 volts with the key on.

As for the two fuse question about the heated rear glass and outside mirrors:

29 supplies power to the "smart" side of the timed relay for the heated glass.
It's power is controlled by the ignition switch.

7 is the "power" fuse that does the heavy lifting.
It gets constant power.

I am feeling a bit stupid. But my mirrors work now.
I finally got around to pulling the door trim off. There I found the connector to the mirror switch just dangling. What you can look for to avoid my stupidity is the connector mounted just below the window/door lock switch if there is nothing plugged in there that is why your mirrors don't work. Fish out the connector to the mirror switch and plug it in there. I also now know why the door feels loose. Seems PO used a drywall screw to fasten the trim to the door in the absence of the plastic fasteners.
/Me runs off to find some of the plastic fasteners to hold the door trim on correctly.
