thanks bro.

Yeah I think my relay is FFF'd UP!! I'm getting intermittent issues with my fuel system on my '96 850 GLT. Ignition system checks out okay but I'm loosing pressure as soon as I shut off engine. So I'm thinking bad check valve or damper but I'm getting most of the same codes that were expressed by person started this thread. So a bad check valve should just really cause a bad first crank start or start on second try. So I'm thinking my fuel pump relay cause she'll run perfect for atleast a half hour or more usually and then she'll start to misfire intermittently. Any suggestions or thoughts are more than welcome. I'm pulling relay out after I send this post, thanks.

Anybody know if the fuel pump itself can cause intermittent failure to start or to cause stalling? I’ve replaced both of the usual relays, plugs wires etc. which helped, but it still occasionally fails to start and will then start after 15-20 minutes. If not the pump, what is the next item to check? (ECU?)

A failing cam position sensor can cause intermittent weird faults like that.

Would a failing CPS be recorded as a DTC on the 850?

Only sometimes - that's why it can be tricky to track down.

Easy/cheap thing to do would be to get a fuel pressure gauge on there and try to get it to act up and see what's going on. If you have fuel pressure next time it does that, I'd probably go after the cam sensor next.

You've tried pulling the wire out of the MAF sensor and starting it? I had the same problems you do when mine went bad. No MAF specific CEL codes were reported. I could start it sometimes by holding the gas pedal all the way down... it felt like someone was turning the key on and off while I was driving.

I replaced the camshaft position sensor and started/stopped it 5 or 6 times with no problem. With way too much confidence, I drove a couple of miles to the store without incident in 20 degree weather. I had the joy of walking home in that 20 dergree weather. The car would not restart and I ended up having it towed home. The one good thing is the problem is no longer intermittant; it's permanent. The car hasn't started since. It cranks fine, but there is no oder of gas from the tail pipe telling me the problem likley lies in the fuel system somehere. I will test electricals to rule that out.

Any suggestions as to where I go from here (other than a Toyota dealership)?

Mike

I'm right behind you.

You already replaced pump & injector relays...so do you have pressure at the fuel rail? Do you hear the fuel pump run now when you flip the key to the 'run' position without starting the engine?

I will verify that today. I have a feeling I won't be hearing that sound. If that's the problem, is fuel pump R&R the next step?

From there, verify that the fuel pump is actually getting current at the wires. If so, at that point it's safe to assume it died on you.

At least it happened somewhere safe - I had one go in an old car as I was merging onto I-81 in front of a bunch of trucks.
