P1054, TRACs and Check Engine

Post by kevabar »

I have a 1999 V70 base model with 149k. Yesterday the TRACs light came on when I started the car. When I restarted it a few minutes later, the check engine light came on as well. (Both have been on constantly since then and I have drive about 20 miles.) I ran my code reader and P1054 was the result. The engine was slightly rough at idle this evening for a minute or so. Other than that, it warms up, idles and drives smoothly. It stops normally (albeit on drive pavement.)

I had my ABS rebuilt by by Vic in CA about 18 months ago.

I think this is unrelated, but... I had a powering steering leak at the base of the tank which I fixed. However, some of the leaking fluid ran down the side frame rail. I pulled the ABS wheel sensor and did not see any excessive dirt build-up or PS fluid.

Any ideas?

It's relatively odd for the TRACS light to come on by itself without hitting the switch. It's usually there lit up with the ABS light.

1054 is a DTC code from the ABS system. No speed sensor signal. There could be other codes in there, but you won't be getting to them with a regular scan tool.

Would a scanner from AutoZone/PepBoys/etc pull these other codes or do i need to go to a garage?

Generic won't, and I'm fairly sure that theirs won't either.

I noticed this morning that my cruise control does not work. Also, I reset the codes with my reader (Innova 3030). After a 60 mile commute, the reader does not see any codes (after all systems reset). I still have TRACS and Check Engine lights... I guess I am going to call a local mechanic to read the codes for me.

In the 1999+ diagnostic trouble codes list, I found that P1054 is a Secondary Air Injection Pipe Malfunction.

What codes did the shop pull out of it?

Does your abs light come on momentarily at start up, like it is supposed to?

I stopped by Auto Zone and the code they pulled was P1054. I also pulled that with my reader; however, sometimes my reader doesn't see P1054 (or any other code) and sometimes it does. As for the ABS light, it does not come on at all when I start my car.

It sounds like the ABS light is burned out. As for getting accurate codes and actually being able to reset them, what worked for me without dropping big bucks on a Volvo scanner was a laptop with Vol-FCR software and a generic FTDI USB interface that can be had off of ebay for about $15 (or maybe you know someone with a VW who has this interface). If you end up needing to repair ABS module, Ozark Lee's guide worked for me. On mine, I found the solder on the pins from the power connector was obviously bad.

99s do not have an SAS system
My bet is the ABS is bad (again), sh*t happens sometimes.
No one is perfect (Victor) and neither are the modules, it may just have taken a permanent crap on you.
This all sounds like a bad module but before you emove it, check your axlaes
If for some reason the axle bolt came loose and the axle has come out (even just a little) that can cause all your issues.
I
f not
Have Matt send you another module for $60
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP
