whining noise 2000 xc70

hi

i have a 2000 xc70 with 145k the whining noise is coming from what seems to be the angle gear but im not sure i removed the rear drive shaft and still it sound like something is spinning agenst something i dont know whinning would be the best way to put it i need help please just point me in the right direction just some ideas i really dont want to replace the angle gear but if it will solve my problem i will thank you

you know once under the car it almost seems like a axle or wheel bearing the faster i go the louder it get and the driver side cv is lose i mean there is alot of play in it i can almost move it a half inch tword the tranny and back twords the nuckle any ideas?

after a drive is one hub hotter? do you hear a clunk when turning one way or the other?

I have the same vehicle and rebuilt the angle gear at 96000 miles. Problem was diagnosed by putting car on a lift with engine running and in drive. Used a mechanics stethoscope and touched wheel bearings, cV driveshafts, trani housing and angle gear housing. It was very apparent the bearings were bad in the angle gear. Sounded like a coffee grinder. Had this done after the dealer's diagnosis of replacing CV driveshafts, trani and angle gear @ $7500. Rebuild cost me $800 and I had to do some legwork to get the correct bearings.

thank for the info it was the spline shaft now it work perfect i was sweeting man 2000 are the most expensive angle gears to replace thank goodness hope this will help someone else volvo 4 LIFE
