Bound Up Manual Climate Control

Post by Fish stick88 »

Here is the story (skip to section 2 if you want)

Last year, my MCC was beginning to become bound up. Got it Quoted by a Volvo tech, and the repair would easily cost me over 2k, More than I bought the car for. Welp, took it to mechanic, that happened to be a long lost friend of the family... He pretty much messed it up more that I had it before... He didn't use any write ups, or anything like that because he doesn't ever work on Volvo's (wish he would have told me that prior to working on my car) He basically, bent up cables, and I'm not sure what else... He indefinitely did something with the upper unit, who knows what... the guy doesn't remember himself... Luckily, he made with what I had and only charged me $400. Which, Caused me problems later on...

Today I took my first peak at what was going on, found some bent cables. Seized up flaps. and a "jumble of problems" up by the upper part of the unit (where the cables attach)

Currently I have;
-No Control over Drivers side heat/cooling - Stuck SOLID at 12 o'clock
-Center (distribution) only has from 12 - 6 o'clock (clockwise)
-No Air flowing to the floor, or rear.
-Interesting mix of center air vents, (seems like, AirMix flap is partially stuck open, only on drivers side)
-Grindy sounding Fan/Blower
-Torn up defroster plate
-Howling noise on upper drivers vent (Video upon request)

What I NEED:
-Diagrams of re-alignment for distribution box flaps
-Upper cable attachment and positions drawings
-Lists showing part numbers

-Idea's?

I have not yet pulled the dash, I have taken off the "SRS" knee bolsters, and covers. I will be leaving them off until I get this fixed up. I un-hooked the floor-damper flaps,(its the bent one) Now, I have a FULL range on my distribution, but only about half of the cable's do what they are supposed too....
So.
Do I start from the bottom up?
I have a new Control Unit coming sometime...
As soon as I figure out what cables I need, I will order them, along with my damper arms, etc...

Also, I'd like to thank everyone in advance for the "extra stuff" you will hopefully be finding for me
I truly appreciate it!
Keeping my money in my pocket, and my "Volv" on the road!
Thanks
Aj

Have you considered visiting a junkyard, finding an MCC that works and pulling it apart?
You can learn how it all functions and get all the parts that you need in one stop.
Take pictures...Lots of pictures. Before and during. And notes. Lots of those, too.

Yesterday, I spend basically all day calling around to junkyards near me (in Iowa) It is easier to buy a person down here than it is to buy the MCC unit. I thought about buying a new one. But I still wouldn't know how to install it. Alignment is what threw it off the first time, and if I spend a couple hundred on it, I am not going to be taking any chances.

I also don't think that would help my MCC unit problem if I get the one out of time. Timing is the key here. And I know nothing about it right now...

Another thing, if someone wants to check, or look up for me. I need to know what vents open on what distributon positions. Like...

Defrost - opens - Defroster plate, and what else? if any
Floor heat - opens - floor heat only?
ETC.
Thanks.

Question... What components can go wrong in the blower motor? bearing? mine sounds kinda grindy...

That kink in the cable to the temperature mix damper doesn't look right at all. Is that damper free?

Nope, its stuck, I Know its not right, thats what is causing the blockage to my MCC unit. The mechanic that did the work only made the right half of the distributor able to work. So... I unhooked it and they all worked...
how was it seized?
it opens now...
