Difficulty of Replacing Steering Rack: Please Opine

Post by writer100 »

Since the dawn of time, it seems, my steering rack has been leaking. Stop leaks haven't done the job.

Does anybody (read Bill) have the manual for doing this job on a '94 940? I believe my original rack was a Koyo, but it has been replaced with I am guessing a CAM or TRW rack. Is this going to create a problem re the hoses, etc?

Any tips, warnings, or encouragement, regarding this is welcome.

Thanks.

Thanks JD.

If somebody could respond re hose question, that would be great. Now that the rack is no longer original, I am uncertain as to which type I should get (Koyo or CAM/TRW)?

Thanks.

I do not know about your model but replacing the steering rack in my 2004 C70 ht is very difficult. I have a lift in my garage, necessary at my age, you younger ones can crawl under with jack stands. Support the motor because you will be disconnecting motor mounts to get an extra inch enabling the tight fitting rack to rotate and slip out. Sub frame gets unbolted. 4 bolts holding rack , and the tie rods etc. all need disconnect. A bolt and nut hold the splines to the knuckle, disconnect and pull down. The hardest part is the reinstall. At this point mine is in but for some reason I cannot get the splines back in. The spline count is the same in the new rack. The flat part is lined up where the retaining bolt and nut feed through. I will be using greater force in the morning.
Anyone have any helpful hints?

It's a 940. It's not that difficult to replace the steering rack on 700/900 cars. The hoses should be the same. I've replaced the rack twice on my 1988 760 Turbo wagon.
