Fuel gauge not working
Fuel gauge not working
My fuel and temp gauges in my 1989 740 GL don't work. I took it to my mechanic, he said that I needed to replace the circuit as well as the fuel pump. Does anyone know why I have to replace the fuel pump? Or would just replacing the circuit work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The fuel gauge meter and the temp gauge meter ge the power from a voltage stabilisator unit that is giving aproxamitely 10 volt output. The stabilisator is placed in the back of the instrument cluster. My guess is that the stabilisator is broken. Keep the pump!

does your temp gage give you sometimes correct readings, sometimes all over the place readings. There is a temperature compensation board that removes small variations in temperature when it goes bad the gage stops working properly. You can remove it and get more accurate temperature readings. They have instructions on the www.ipdusa.com site :

click on the instructions so you know what is involved. I made my own jumper out of two computer jumpers with the backs cut off and a small wire.

So I listened to what was said and it turns out I solved the problem but it wasn't the voltage stabilizer.
What I found was that the electrical connection that is located on the cap on the fuel tank was erroded. I ended up going in from the trunk and accidently broke the connection after replacement it was fine.

That just goes to show you that your mechanic is either an idiot or he was trying to pull a fast one on you. Don't ever go back to him!
