Looking For A Volvo

Post by rmmagow »

I don't want to cross-post but if this can go to other forums please let me know.
I am selling a car and with the proceeds I plan to begin a search for a nice older Volvo. I am going to look for an old PV restored, an old Amazon, an 1800 or possibly a 262C or 780. The PV and Amazon would be the most preferred.
Where can I best begin the search. I plan to poke around a little on Craigslist, Ebay, Hemmings, maybe autotrader but I am wondering if those of you deep into Volvos may know of other sites that might yield some better results for the older cars. I'm 60+ years old and am not looking for a car needing a lot of restoration but would mind something that may need some serious mechanical attention. I can't do paint or body work, but possibly interiors, engine, tranny, things like that might be doable.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'm going to move this to the "General" forum so that you can get a more diverse audience. The 1800s seem to fall into 2 distinct camps, fully restored and priced accordingly, or total rust buckets.

There is a place in Pittsburg, KS that specializes in older Volvos called Lamar Automotive. I'm not sure what he has but he seems wired in with the older Vovlo enthusiasts.

So, I've thought of the same thing. I always like the idea of having a driveable "hobby" car (or maybe its a hobby-able driver car).

Not yet, but in some years I'll be doing the same thing. My thoughts center around the following questions:
[*] Can I get repair parts for it ?
[*] WIll it be cheap to maintain ?
[*] Are there repair shops that will know how to help me with it ?

For example, I worry about getting a 1964 P1800 - What if I need a wheel bearing? Or a water pump? Other than a rusty junkyard part, where can I get such things? Or even more obscure parts like a speedometer unit. Etc

With that type of thinking, I've sort of landed on 240 or 7x0 or 850

just thinking out loud here...
