Overdrive and filter issues
I'm needing some help with my 1995 940 sedan. My over drive is acting up. I am no longer able to push the overdrive button on the shifter to let the transmission shift into 4th. The relay seems to be working fine. It still clicks when button is pushed. I'm planning on changing the atf and filter. What I'm wondering is what could be causing the problem and auto zone offers two diffrent types of filters for my year and model car. One is for an AW71 transmission and the other is for AW30-40LE. They look completely different. Which one should I use?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The AW71 gearbox was used on the 940. The AW30-40 was used on the 960.
Changing the ATF and filter may solve the problem but you need to check that the solenoid on the side of the gearbox activates when you press the button. Have someone press the button whilst you get as close as you can to the gearbox and listen for a loud click as it engages/disengages. However, even if it does click does not mean it is passing any fluid as it could be blocked. If you do hear it click and it still doesn't work you need to remove the solenoid to check for a blockage. If it is blocked you can clear it, replace it or use one of IPD's solenoid bypass kits.
Bill.
