Screeching wheel noise from driver's side of engine

Post by jvswan »

I am a new Volvo owner. I'm having a number of problems with my 2001 S40. One of them is a noise from the engine on the driver's side that sounds like a screechy fan or pulley wheel. Mainly I hear it at idle, but it is starting to get worse and I hear it when I drive.

Sounds like a fan that is rubbing or a pulley wheel with a bad bearing. Runs all the time.

Can someone help with an ID? Can't be many things on that side of the engine that could make that sort of noise. TIA

When looking at the engine, it sounds like the noise is coming from below the air filter. Is there some sort of fan down there to draw in air or something? I can't see anything.

I really need some help with this. Does anyone know what this noise could be? Is there a fan near the air intake? I cannot find anything that might be causing the noise, and, of course it isn't always loud when I've got the hood open.
