DOn't know which fluid im low on....

Post by pass »

So I have a 1984 Volvo 240 DL and to get to the point, I know I am low on a "fluid" but I don't know which one. This may sound starnge, I know, but I don't know what kind of fluid it is. I have been working on some minor things around the engine and came across this cap. It was like a oil cap. I twisted it a half turn and it stated to come out. I read on the short little gauge that it says I am low... and the tops say not to over fill it. But what the hell is it? It's not oil, or brake fluid, but I don't know what it is. This should be a question to answer, but I don't really know how to get one on my own. The cap has a rubber rim around it when I twist it back on, and the little measuing guage is about 1.5-2 inches long. the fluid is a dark color but I can't tell what it is. If you need more info, just tell me.

I can sum this up in two words...

POWER STEERING

The little container is the power steering reservoir. If you follow the hose out of this, you will see it goes to a pump that is driven from one of the fan belts. This uses "power steering fluid", which you can buy at most auto parts stores.

Let us know if you have any other questions.
