I have a 2000 V40 1.9T. Yesterday the temp gauge neared the red three times and I pulled over each time to let it cool down. I've looked on a few forums and from what I've read, best case scenario it's a bad thermostat or relay (i.e. the fan doesn't kick on at low speed). Whenever I shut it off, the sound of a fan runs for a few minutes.
Has anyone had similar problems? Btw, the check engine light is on, and I think it's a code for P0301 (cylinder 1 misfire). Thanks

Sounds like you've confirmed your fan is operational. If coolant level is normal and the t-stat opens when it's supposed to, I would still look at the coolant for signs of discoloration and/or excessive pressure buildup in the cooling system to eliminate a blown head gasket. If in doubt, you may want to look at the spark plugs too.
I put my money on the small things; T-stat first (and easy to change.) When you drain the coolant, look at its color.
BTW, is the P0301 the only code you pulled? How many miles on this engine?

Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Let's hope that your misfire codes do not come back (or if they do they will only pertain to coils/plugs and nothing bigger)

First thing is not going to be a nice thing to hear
Do a compression Test and you will find that cylinders #1 and #2 are very close to the same compression. Then you are going to come to the realization that the 1.9T engines have a overheating problem directly associated with the warping of the head (Bolts stretched and warped the head due to the overheating.
You need to change the Head Gasket, have the head plained (Mine was .015 warped and I did one that was .023) and replace the Timing belt at the same time, it will cost you less in the Long Run.
After I did this (cost me $270), I have been extremely happy with the vehicle. Replace the CAM SHAFT SEALS when doing this job. Make sure you use a VOLVO seal for the Front Left seal.
