WTB a wagon

Post by cdm »

Need a wagon. Always liked volvos. So here it is, looking for a volvo wagon.

Price: cheap. I have 0 interest in your collectible/priced posession/modified machine. I am not listing a number but keep this line in mind if you have/know of something for sale.

Things i do not care about:
- paint
- emissions/inspections. dont have them, dont have to pass them, etc. doesn't matter.
- miles; its all about condition and not miles i always say
- AWD. matter of fact, i do not want it.

Things that would be nice to have but not a deal breaker
- AC; i can drop the evap i guess. or compressor.
- manual trans

Things i care about
- excellent engine and transmission. No oil leaks (within reason), no burning oil, no trans slipping, no "needs a clutch" etc etc.
- Has to run and drive. properly. none of those "oh it ran 5 months ago and then it wouldnt start, but it runs GREAT". waste of time..
- NO RUST. that includes undercarriage and everything else. I am not cutting off and stripping every bolt working on a rustbucket

Location: SE usa and up to say DC or so. again, flexible for the right car. no cars from PA. No exception.

I am in the atlanta area and have exhaustedly wasted a lot of time looking at both cheap and expensive misrepresented junk. keyword, misrepresented.

Let me see if this gets me anywhere. I am out of classifieds at this point

edit: early V series and 850 series would be my preferences. leaning towards the 850 due to price and simplicity, and having somewhat of an experience with them from back in the 90s.

That's absurd.
(Oh and you don't "drop" the evap, it's an 11 hour job, basically the entire car comes apart)
What's wrong with PA cars?
I've never had a bad one or a RUSTED one.
They don't use much salt around here.

What you may want to probably avoid are New England cars, THOSE are the ones that have cosmetic issues.
Anyhow most of the cars I've been buying lately are VA cars and the ones I have for sale in the classifieds are from around there.
The 2000 XC (which is an EXCELLENT car) was a MD car, (right next to DC) the 2007 XC was a VA car. My 99 is a PA car but is as good or better.
My 99 T5M ,which was an unbelivable car, came from my (PA) area, at 145K miles you could almost eat off the underside (and that's the way I bought it, driven every day, all year around).

However, my reply is moot as I don't sell cheap Volvos.
I don't buy crap and I make sure that EVERYTHING is repaired and I warm you, if you go price shopping, you will find some Volvos and as sure as I'm typing this, they ALL (to a car) will need an incredible amount of work.
You get in this world what you pay for so
Good luck, you WILL need it. There is a lot of crap out there. I would go as far as to say that now 90+% of them are crap and not worth anyone's time. Very few Volvos in the South in general

What is absurd? The dash comes out and it is not that bad on these cars compared to others.

After driving in PA i will never touch anything that has been on your "roads". No discussion, i know what they are like contrary to what you say :)

I am looking for something that somebody doesn't want to pay a shop a bunch of money to fix and i can do it for just the worth of my time and some spare parts.

Price and condition are not a linear curve my friend, and people lie. People lie so bad it isn't funny. I generaly ignore what they say and judge for myself. It gets downright annoying at times.... The thing is that there are no 850s that aren't in bad shape at this point, sans a few enthusiast owned and maintained examples (to me not worth it so lets move on). Early gen2 v70s have the self destructive transmission and the XC model eats its drivetrain up until what was it.. MY2004? Something like that. yeah.

Few cars i missed on because i was snoozing. AT is devoid but CL seems to have a few popping up weekly in my area. The search continues.

If you've never done it then you shouldn't say. YES, it is THAT bad. It's a 10 hr flat rate job which means for someone who's never done it, more like 15+

Making a blanket statement as this is so ridiculous, I just don't know what to say. "Contrary to what you say? I LIVE HERE AND HAVE THE BEST GEN 1 VOLVOS ON THE BOARDS!
PA is the 6th largest state in the country. I wouldn't buy a car from the very Northern portions opf the state either, there is a huge difference, but there are good and bad cars from all over this state, just like everywhere else.
I've also lived in Fl and many/most of the older cars there are just pieces of crap because there's no state inspection!
There are wonderful cars in NH. VT. RI AND Mass. too (as long as they were taken care of and not driven in Boston proper too much!

You will miss a lot of good cars as most older Volvos live in the Northeast (and the Northwest)

Wow good luck. Whats absurd is thinking you'll be finding a pristine Volvo wagon with not a lot of issues, for cheap! You may luck out and get a garaged car from some old ladies family after she dies but other than that good luck. What is your price target? I may know of a couple but need to know the range your looking. That may help with assisting you in finding a car!

Found several (with MT to boot), but all were sold within hours. It was literally a case of who could bring the money faster.. I lost due to location. Its ok. The garbage (and 99% are garbage with a high pricetag) loiters around still.

Not looking for perfection (LOL!), just something that isn't in need of 15000$ in parts alone.

So let me up the ante now. Looking at manual transmission cars only. 1995 - 2001 V70/850 base. No AWD.

Found several leads through this forum to date but people's circumstances change and location can be a problem. I thank all those who contacted me. And they can tell you i dont bite :)

SUVs are prepped for the season, so i have no timeframe for this car anymore. Whenever the right one comes along i'll pick it up. Alternatively also looking at audi allroad 6mt and e39 5/6mt. I am willing to spend money but i will not give you money your car does not deserve. Period.

Budget is flexible but other than the ones i missed out on, im yet to find anything that i want to offer more than 1$ on. Literally. I had a guy telling me how he didnt want to be offered scrap value for the car but had no title because it had a lien on it for a lot of $.. Well how exactly did he think that would work?! Etc nonsense. It is entertaining though. Never shopped for cars in this price bracket so it is an experience lol

But if people want to know, let me throw out 5000$.

Bought a 2000NA V70 auto wagon with 160K miles for $860 last year. Bought it that cheap because the dealer suspected the 5 speed transmission was about to fail and had a trans "specialist" confirm the same . Also after his detail one of the coil packs failed. He sold on eBay to the highest bidder and I was the lucky guy.

It has absolutely no PCV pressure, timing belt was done in '09 at 116k miles, starts every time and interior leather is OK except for the console lid.

After new discs/pads for around $200 and a lucky find of 4 near new tyres on 16" wheels at a dismantler for $300 the car was on the road. Replaced the B4 servo cover and put new fluid in & got the TCM updated to find that the transmission was still shifting poorly. Just got back from a 100 mile mountain pass drive combined with long distance touring of 1000 miles and the transmission has adapted and shifts almost perfectly.

There's still a couple of small gremlins to solve (ETM contactless sensor for $130 and coolant level sensor as well as an SRS light) but I still think I got the bargain of the century.
My on road costs were around $2,500 including 12 months registration.

My point is I took a chance and came out on top. It looked grim but repairs were inexpensive. I could have been in the hole for thousands on repairs (not that I have the folding stuff to spare) but I was fortunate.

I could easily have spent $5,000 on what I thought was a good example privately and if I didn't know exactly what to look for could have been up for motor/trans/PCV and a further $5K.

Cars are like women, if you pick the right one, it's a lifetime of co-operation and mutual respect. If you pick the wrong one, and I have done it with my '92 960 for example which put me in the hole for $5,300 for a oil chewing used engine (long story), then a transmission for $1,100 then the relationship is somewhat strained and mechanics are viewed similarly to divorce lawyers who charge quicker than a Mexican bull at the arena.

happy ending to this story. time to go on a parts buying binge. mechanically car is awesome. interior is mint, exterior could use a hood repaint due to paint chips. but no clearcoat or other issues typical of these (garaged). so much for it couldnt be done eh
